Sport: Vanuatu cricketers fall short against Malaysia

12:25 pm on 1 May 2018

An improved batting performance wasn't enough to give Vanuatu their first win in World Cricket League Four, with Malaysia holding on for a 23 run victory in Kuala Lumpur.

After putting the hosts into bat, Vanuatu struck early with Apolinaire Stephen snaring the wicket of both opening batsmen.

That brought Ahmed Faiz to the crease, who anchored the innings with a well-paced 86 from 101 balls, to help Malaysia reach 196 all out in the 44th over.

In reply, seven Vanuatu batsmen made it to double figures but most failed to push on with player/coach Shane Deitz the top scorer again with a patient 46 from 72 deliveries.

Despite being well placed at 3 for 117, the run-rate proved too much as Vanuatu lost their final seven wickets for 56 runs and were bowled out for 173 in the final over.

Vanuatu, who lost their opening match against Jersey, are back in action against Uganda on Wednesday.
