Engineers from the New Zealand Defence Force have recently trained 12 Tongan soldiers on construction planning and project management in a mutual programme between the two militaries.
Lieutenant Cam Gurney said the skills training at the naval base in Nuku'alofa will help the Tonga soldiers with planning, running and managing a range of construction projects, including buildings and roads.
The mission follows an earlier exercise in Vanuatu where a joint team of engineers from New Zealand, Vanuatu and China helped build two medical staff houses and an aid post.
The activities were partly funded by New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
