A report in New Caledonia has suggested a complete overhaul of the funding model of the health care system.

The study by the French agency on social affairs provided 35 recommendations to update the system.

New Caledonia's health care organisation has accumulated debts of more than $US230 million and is forecast to run at a deficit of $US100 million this year.

The authors commended efforts to improve care over the years but noted the lack of funding plans, regulatory bodies or strategic plans.

The president Philippe Germain has welcomed the report, saying it will help move an archaic organisation to a modern system.
