The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is to lead a two-year project to strengthen the capacity of the Nauru Electoral Commission.

The exercise aims to create a more inclusive and transparent electoral process.

The UN's regional director for Asia and the Pacific, Haoliang Xu, said it would help strengthen the electoral process as a whole, including civic education and voter awareness.

Recent elections had been credible and in a collaborative partnership with the Nauru Electoral Commission, the UNDP aimed to ensure this was also the case for the next poll in 2019, he said.

"Not because of the flaws that anyone has detected per se but because of the desire of all partners to ensure that the next election goes as well as the 2016 election."
