Opponents of a bill legalising marijuana in the Northern Marianas have gained another supporter with the Board of Education making an appeal to keep cannabis out of public schools.

The board specifically wants the bill amended to include banning marijuana on all campuses and from public school system buildings and to exempt it from discriminating against employees who use marijuana.

It said safety-sensitive positions, like bus drivers and teachers, need to be sober when performing their duties.

The Board of Education also says the public school system gets federal funding so is covered by drug-free workplace laws, and the marijuana law would threaten this.
