Fiji navy sailors sentenced over vessel grounding

Four members of the Fiji navy have been reprimanded and fined over the grounding of a navy vessel two year ago.

The officers were court martialled for the grounding of RFNS Kiro on Belcher Reef off Suva in July 2016.

The Fiji Times reports Lieutenant Commander Saula Tuilevuka received a severe reprimand and was fined an amount equal to 28 days salary.

Lieutenant Samuela Cikaitoga was similarly sentenced with a severe reprimand, his rank dropped to sub lieutenant and he has received a fine equal to 28 days of his salary.

Lieutenant Ben Salacakau and Ensign Mike Brown also received severe reprimands and fines equal to 28 days of their salaries.

The president of the court martial, Commander Netani Sukanaivalu, said the vessel was no longer available to the Fiji Navy which was left with only one boat.

The small patrol vessel was provided to Fiji by the Australian Defense Force in 1995.
