Guam drops school backpack rule

7:10 pm on 6 August 2018

School students on Guam will be able to use any backpack they choose when school returns next week.

The Pacific Daily News reports the government has dropped a 12-year ban on opaque backpacks as part of an overhaul of rules for public schools.

Students have had to use see-through bags since 2006, when three people were injured when a bag filled with chemicals exploded at a local high school.

The school dropout age has increased to 18 and parents who fail to send their children to school are liable to be charged and sentenced to community service.
