There is uncertainty over the future of the passenger ferry service linking New Caledonia's Isle of Pines with Noumea.
This follows a dispute over a debt incurred by the operator Sudiles, which expects to be helped by the government of the Southern Province.
Sudiles, which owns the ship Betico 2, has accumulated operating losses of $US6 million over the period 2012 to 2016.

It warned that no more sailings are planned from September onward.
Discussions are continuing and the Southern Province has reportedly offered to contribute $US300,000.
The company also provides shipping links to the Loyalty Islands.
