A firefighter strike in New Caledonia has been suspended in light of the independence referendum on November 4th.
A statement to that effect has been issued by the government which says discussions about any restructure will be put off until later next month.
This comes after unionised white collar officials joined the firefighters wanting to cripple aviation from Wednesday.
They had warned of a unlimited general strike at the airports.
Some striking firefighters had taken their protest to outside the seat of government in Noumea, lying down to suggest the government stance entailed their profession's death.
