A former Nauru cabinet minister, who hopes to be re-elected in the national election next month, wants to see the parliamentary system strengthened.
Mathew Batsiua, who had once served as Justice Minister, was suspended from parliament more than four years ago when he protested against the actions of the Baron Waqa government.
He is part of the so-called 'Nauru 19', which has been facing legal action from the state since that protest, and he says the rule of law on the island has eroded under Baron Waqa's rule.
Mr Batsiua said he wants to ensure democracy is restored.
"I think the parliamentary systems and generally, the rule of law, in Nauru has been eroded over the last six years. Getting back into parliament means that I will be able to work with other members of parliament to strengthen the parliamentary system to ensure that the democracy gets back on track in Nauru."
