France's new High Commissioner to French Polynesia has taken up his position, filling the post that has been vacant since May.

Dominique Sorain started his posting to Tahiti by laying a wreath at the war memorial in Papeete.

He has also met the French Polynesian president Edouard Fritch to review items on the common agenda, including a planned visit by the French president Emmanuel Macron in April.

Mr Sorain, who last served as the prefect of the French Indian Ocean department of Mayotte, replaced Rene Bidal who left Papeete before his departure had been announced.

In Noumea, Laurent Prevost has meanwhile taken over as the new French High Commissioner to New Caledonia.
