A 25-year-old Samoan boxing gold medalist in last month's Pacific Games, Nu'uuli Mose Livai, has escaped a jail sentence despite being convicted twice of burglary and theft.
Today a court spared him from going to Tanumalala prison after the prosecution recommended a 15 month jail sentence.
Instead, the court gave Nu'uuli 300 hours of community work at the Samoa Victim Support Group.
The aim is for him to help children at the group's campus with their sports.
But the presiding judge also warned Nu'uuli that if he appears again on the same offences it would not matter how many gold medals he won, he would be sent straight to jail.
