A French Polynesian township has broken the law by holding beauty pageants with children.
Radio 1 reports that the town of Papara organised the Hine e Toa event featuring boys and girls between the ages of eight and eleven.
The report said the town administration was unaware that under a French law to protect children, such events are not permitted for those children 13 years old and younger.
Breaches are fined with just under $US2,000.
The report makes no mention if the event organisers will be prosecuted.
Beauty pageants are popular in French Polynesia.
