French Polynesia has suspended, for one month, the work permits of locally-employed Chinese workers who are currently in China.

The move is the latest in a raft of measures aimed at stopping the coronavirus emanating from Wuhan from entering French Polynesia.

Travellers who since the start of the year have been to any of Asia's main countries, including India, the Philippines and Japan, must provide a medical certificate less than five days-old that they aren't carrying the virus.

All flights to the territory must be routed through Tahiti's airport where passengers are screened.

Of the more than 5000 people checked on arrival in the past week, six had been in China in the preceding two weeks.

None showed any symptoms of the disease.
