French Polynesia has recorded its biggest single-day increase in Covid-19 infections.

46 more people contracted the coronavirus in the last 24-hour period, raising the total in the second wave to 236.

In the first wave from March to June 62 cases were registered.

The sharp rise this past week prompted the authorities to lift the alert level to 2 out of 3, which might lead to school closures.

The government said most Covid-19 cases were in Tahiti and Moorea, but one was now confirmed on Raiatea.

In mid-July French Polynesia abolished mandatory quarantine requirements for international arrivals.

Two weeks later fresh Covid-19 cases were reported.
