The former Health Minister of the Cook Islands, Nandi Glassie, has died over the weekend.
The Cook Islands News reported Glassie died on Friday local time in Rarotonga, after a long and brave battle with cancer.
Glassie is the second former cabinet minister to pass away in recent days, following the death of former prime minister Joe Williams who died in Auckland after succumbing to Covid-19.
Glassie had been a government minister between 2010 and 2018, most recently holding the portfolios of Health and Justice.
Some of his most notable achievements included being at the forefront of launching a 10 year Health Workforce Plan and his work on mental health.
Despite becoming an experienced politician since his emergence in 2006 he eventually lost his Tengatangi-Areora-Ngatiarua seat in 2018 and then was too ill to contest a subsequent by-election the following year.
