Negotiations have continued into the weekend in French Polynesia to avert an open-ended general strike called for November 24th.

Unions, representing public and private sector employees, have been in talks with government ministers after filing a strike notice last Tuesday.

The unions are seeking pay increases from next year, including a four-percent hike of the minimum wage.

Further talks are expected tomorrow.

Earlier the unions also demanded the scrapping of the law making Covid-19 vaccinations compulsory.

The employer organisation said taking strike action now is incomprehensible because the economic situation won't bear it.

It also questiond the unions' stance in favour of vaccinations but against the vaccination law, saying in the global urgency of a pandemic, such a position is no longer acceptable.
