A man in Samoa has been jailed for more than 12 years for killing his pregnant wife.

Edward Ulberg was given a sentence of 12 years and four months by Supreme Court Justice Niava Mata Keli Tuatagaloa.

In a plea agreement with the prosecution, Ulberg pleaded guilty to manslaughter, while his other initial charges, including murder and grevious bodily harm, were dropped.

According to the police summary of facts, the defendant stabbed his wife on several occasions.

Justice Tuatagaloa labelled Ulberg's acts as cowardice.

She also said the lengthy jail time will serve as a deterrent to men who abuse their wives.
