The 16.6 million tala Samoa Police Academy project that's been in the works for many years is finally underway.
A groundbreaking ceremony was held on the site at Tafa'igata, the old prison with Prime Minister, Fiame Naomi Mataafa and China's Ambassador to Samoa, Chao Xiaoliang turning the first sods.
The project is funded by China, with Samoa's approved assistance of 1.1 million tala making up the total estimated cost. It is estimated to be completed by mid 2024.
Chao Xiaoliang said the project will include functional buildings and auxiliary facilities, and will undoubtedly benefit the Samoa Police Service.
"This groundbreaking is inseparable from the support of all parties. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those whose dedication and efforts made this project a reality," said Chao.
He acknowledged China's relationship with the Samoa Government and also the Shaanxi Construction Engineering Group Corporation for the endeavours put into the project despite the adverse impact of some restrictive factors including Covid-19.
He said that ever since diplomatic relations were established between China and Samoa 47 years ago, China has been devoted to strengthening bilateral cooperation with Samoa.
He said the Police Academy Project will include functional buildings and auxiliary facilities and will benefit the Samoa Police Service.
