PNG police have been meeting with communities involved in the Kiriwina massacre in a bid to negotiate peace and order on the island.

Last Monday's violence left 24 people dead and more than 120 people injured, with some people sustaining life-threatening injuries.

Kiriwina Island doctor, Giyodobu Tosiyeru, is in the provincial capital, Alotau, from where he has been supporting ground staff.

He said Losuia township, where the fighting took place, is quiet.

Dr Tosiyeru said the affected communities have been receptive and are cooperating with police.

No arrests have been made so far.

The District Administration Office remains closed.

All treated injuries had been stabilised by the District Health Clinical team and no referrals to Alotau were reported.

Three medic camps have been set up in different areas across the island.
