Rugby - Fijiana

The Fijiana Drua scored 20 unanswered points to stun the previous unbeaten Waratahs in the Super W.

The 20-17 victory sees the Fijiana Drua into the Super W final.

The Waratahs dominated to start with and went to a 17-0 lead.

The Drua dominated the second half and continued to apply pressure on the Waratahs line, camping inside the 22-metre line for 20 minutes.

A 69th-minute try saw the Fijiana Drua take the lead for the first time, and they held on for the vistory.

Sevens - Tonga

In Cape Town, South Africa, the Tonga men's 7s rugby team defeated Germany 33-26 in the semi-finals of the World Sevens Challenger Series competition on Sunday night to claim a spot in the HSBC Sevens Series play-offs in London in two weeks.

That will give them the opportunity to fight for a spot as a core team in the annual sevens series amongst the world's best sevens rugby nations such as New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa and Australia.

Although they lost 28-26 to Belgium in the final their semifinal win and last week's final victory in round one of the challenger series was enough to give Tonga promotion.

Sevens - Fiji

Jerry Tuwai and Fiji were overrun by New Zealand in the Cup semi finals.

The Fiji sevens management teams have named two strong squads for the upcoming Toulouse and London 7s rugby tournaments this month.

The events will be the last for the 2022/2023 HSBC Sevens Series.

Fiji men's 7s team coach Ben Gollings has named dual Olympic Gold medalist Jerry Tuwai, forward Paula Nayacakalou and backline utility Filipe Sauturaga in his squad.

Sauturaga is back in the fold after missing the World Rugby Sevens Series legs since January.

Nayacakalou replaces Skipper Tevita Daugunu, who sustained a knee injury in Singapore last month.

Meanwhile, Fijiana 7s Head Coach Saiasi Fuli has named two debutants for their final tournament in Toulouse, France this month.

Elenoa Adinaimata of Seahawks 7s and Striders rugby club's Mereseini Naidau have been named in the 12-member squad.

Judo - Cook Islands

A Cook Islands-born judoka has won two gold medals at the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Finnish Open.

Tagata Pasifika reports John Wuatai-Tariau only started training in the sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in January 2022.

At the Finnish Open in Helsinki, he won the men's White Belt category for both 100.5kg-plus and the Open Weight Class.

Remarkably, it was his first competition.

Wuatai-Tariau is also a player-coach with the Warriors Rugby Club Helsinki, winning three national titles since moving to Finland in 2015.

He has also earned two caps with the national rugby team.

Rugby league - PNG Hunters

The PNG Hunters recorded their first home win when they defeated Mackay Cutters 18-10 in the QRL Hostplus Cup at the weekend.

But that comes at a huge cost as backrower Sherwin Tanabi was taken to hospital for treatment.

Tanabi left the field just eight minutes in the opening minutes of first half.

Rugby league - PNG women

The Parramatta Eels NRL-W side has announced the signing of Papua New Guinea captain Elsie Albert.

The 26-year-old prop has signed a deal until the end of 2024.

Albert has played 15 games for the St George Illawarra Dragons in the NRL-W since 2020.

Albert said she appreciated how the Eels approached her and showed a genuine interest in having her there.

Pacific Games - partnership

The Pacific Games Organising Committee (GOC) and the Oceania Regional Anti-Doping Organisation (ORADO) have officially announced their partnership for the Sol2023 Pacific Games this year.

The GOC and the Pacific Games Council (PGC) last week agreed to contract ORADO for doping control services for this year's Games. These services include athlete sample collection, and community and athlete outreach education on the importance of clean sport and the doping control process.

The agreement will also see that GOC ensures all competition venues will have designated doping control stations.

Weighlifting - Dika Toua

Papua New Guinea Olympian and weightlifting legend Dika Toua has been appointed the first female president of the national weightlifting federation following an annual general meeting held last Friday.

Toua told The National her main focus was earning medals for the country in international events such as the Pacific and Commonwealth Games.

"It is a privilege and honour to be elected as PNGWF's first female president, it has been long waiting despite the medal contributions for PNG in regional and international games," Toua said.

Meanwhile, coaches and technical officials from Port Moresby and outside centres attended a two-day seminar conducted by national coach Paul Coffa.

About 20 participants including former and current national weightlifting representatives Steven Kari, Thelma Toua, Morea Baru and Dika Toua attended the seminar.

Palau - athletes of the Year

Stevick Patris was awarded the male athlete of the year and Nihla Reddin, the female athlete of the year honour at the 2023 PNOC Sports Banquet at the Palau National Gymnasium at the weekend.

The Island Times said the annual event recognises athletes in various sports, highlighting their achievements and growth in their specific sports.

The coach of the year was awarded to Saki Naivana and Kali Tevid.

Athletes, coaches, sponsors, Palau National Olympic Committee members, President Surangel Whipps Jr and Palau Council of Chiefs members attended the event.
