Papua New Guinea (PNG) is to hold the first PNG-Asia Investment Conference in Hong Kong in October this year.

It is to be hosted by PNG Chamber of Mines and Petroleum.

The aim is to bring government and business representatives from China and other parts of Asia to explore investment opportunities in PNG.

In addition to opportunities in the mining, petroleum, and energy sectors, PNG wants to encourage investment in agriculture, fisheries, forestry, manufacturing, and service industries.

The government has said the Special Economic Zones it was planning around the country would be part of the agenda.

Prime Minister James Marape said they wanted to tap into foreign direct investment from the rapidly growing Asian region.

"While discussions about strengthening ties with China and greater Asia have been ongoing for many years, the focus has mostly been on the political front," he said.

He said the time had come to work hand in hand with businesses to create investment opportunities for Asian investors, particularly in the minerals and energy sectors.

Marape is planning to address the conference, shedding light on why PNG stands as an appealing investment destination for Asian investors.

The prime minister also wants to emphasise the country's pivotal role in the global energy and mineral landscape, offering substantial returns to investors, especially those from China and other Asian nations.
