The United Liberation Movement for West Papua, ULMWP, is calling for two weeks of national mourning after Papuan leader Lukas Enembe died, while in an Indonesian military hospital on Tuesday.
In January 2023, Enembe was arrested by Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission on charges of bribery, for around $US3million.
His declining health had been a constant concern for his supporters, who claimed the outspoken leader's arrest was politically motivated.
The ULMWP said Enembe was not given the medical treatment he needed after being arrested.
Executive secretary of the ULMWP, Markus Haluk, said Enembe repeatedly asked for access to treatment from a specialist doctor from Singapore, who was familiar with his illness. The requests were rejected.
"Lukas Enembe's health condition was not considered earlier this month when the Jakarta High Court Panel sentenced him to 10 years in prison," Haluk said.
