The Ministry for Pacific Peoples says it will continue to support and fund the Pacific Island language weeks in Aotearoa.

This is in response to queries regarding an email sighted by RNZ Pacific from the ministry to Pacific community leaders regarding a restructure and the disestablishment of the languages unit.

A spokesperson for the Ministry has confirmed 14 roles were disestablished from its former Pacific Languages directorate, but said the languages work continues through other restructured roles.

These include three roles in the Policy and Insights directorate and 24 roles in the commissioning and partnerships directorate.

It is unclear at this stage what impact the restructure has had on planning and preparation for the eleven Pacific language weeks on the ministry's calendar.

According to the Public Service Association, 57 positions were disestablished at the Ministry of Pacific Peoples as part the government's required spending cuts.
