A tropical cyclone warning in place for Niue due to cyclone Pita has been cancelled.

Fiji's metservice has also lifted associated coastal inundation, gale winds and heavy swell warnings.

In its last update [1015 NZT], the service said Pita was moving east-southeast at around 40 kilometres an hour.

The forecast is for moderate to fresh southerly winds, gusty at times, and occasional rain.

Earlier, category 1 tropical cyclone Pita was expected to bring severe weather to Niue on Friday. (local time)

Meanwhile Tonga's metservice has announced that the tropical cyclone warning previously in force for the Niuas, Vava'u and Ha'apai has now been cancelled.

In its latest update, it said the system is currently moving east at a speed of 60 km/hr.

RNZ Pacific's cyclone watch service has now been activated.
