The people of the autonomous Papua New Guinea region of Bougainville will head to the polls in September.

The Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) announced the official dates for the 2025 general elections on Thursday.

The Speaker Simon Pentanu will issue the writs for the fifth general elections on Monday, 7 July, the ABG government said in a statement.

The dates for the polls are as follows:

  • Issue of writs - 7 July
  • Nomination open - 8 July
  • Nomination close - 10 July
  • Polling period starts - 2 September
  • Polling day - 4 September
  • Polling reriod ends - 8 September
  • Counting starts - 9 September
  • Counting ends - 21 September
  • Return of writs - 22 September

The 2025 elections will include the new five single-member constituency seats bringing the total number of seats in the fifth House to 46, including the seats for the new president and speaker, Pentanu said.

He said that it was important that the election be conducted in a lawful manner.

The Office of the Bougainville Electoral Commission will be tasked with delivering the election.

Bougainville Electoral Commissioner Tsianai thanked all the local stakeholders involved in the election process, including the Australian and New Zealand governments for their support.
