The Papua New Guinea Tourism Promotion Authority (TPA) says all parties involved in the Kokoda Track need to work together to develop a master plan.
The track, which crosses the country from north of Port Moresby, is considered PNG's main tourism attraction.
Kokoda Track Authority chief executive Julius Wargirai told NBC that, apart from trekking, there are other tourism products that could be developed.
He said this would include bird watching, fishing, and rafting.
Wargarai said that a master master plan could be developed if there is a collaborative effort from all stakeholders.
This includes the recent signing of the Kokoda Sanitation Project - a first step towards fully utilizing the track.
The TPA chief executive Eric Mossman said the Track brings a lot of revenue into the country, and his organisation wants to work with stakeholders to ensure specific improvements are addressed as time goes by.
Meanwhile, the owners of 95 campsites along the track have formed two associations to work with partners to make the track the 'want-to-go tourism destination' for all.
