Cyclone Seru is slowly moving away from Vanuatu, with a yellow alert for Tafea province lifted.

In its latest advisory Vanuatu's Meteorology and Geohazards department says cyclone Seru is now a category one storm.

The system is slowly moving east-southeast at 21km/h.

Winds close to its centre are estimate at 95km/h.

The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geohazards Department said isolated heavy rainfalls will continue over the southern group, with rough to very rough seas over southern waters.

A marine strong wind warning is current over channel and southern waters of Vanuatu.

Damaging gale force winds of 75km/h and increasing to 105km/h are expected within 30 nautical miles from the centre of the system.

Strong to gale force winds over the southern islands will decrease rapidly as the system continues to track in the east southeasterly direction further away from Vanuatu.

The department is set to issue its next advisory at 12pm local time.

The Fiji Meteorological Service said Seru has been downgraded to a category one cyclone.

While the system is currently in Vanuatu waters, the Fiji MetService has issued a heavy rain warning for the whole of the group.

It said the cyclone is located to the far southwest of Fiji and continues to track southeastwards.

Meanwhile, schools in Fiji's Lau Group are reopening on Thursday after cyclone Rae.
