Low number of NZ Pasifika academics adds to cultural burden

From , 5:03 am on 6 September 2018

Pasifika scholars are burdened with 'invisible cultural labour,' according to one New Zealand academic.

Victoria University sociologist Joanna Kidman says a lack of Pacific academics means they become 'the Pacific voice on everything' at the country's universities.

Dr Kidman has been researching their experiences.

She says Pasifika make up only 1.5 percent of the academic workforce, despite being 8 percent of the population's.

Dr Kidman told Dominic Godfrey this compounds high levels of institutional isolation and racism.
