The Red Cross has opened its emergency operations centre in Luganville as Tropical Cyclone Oma looms over northern Vanuatu.
Oma was upgraded to Category 2 on Wednesday afternoon bringing winds of up to 130 kilometres per hour to northern and central Vanuatu over the next few days.
People are also being warned of heavy rain, flash flooding and high seas.
The Red Cross team leader John Boar, spoke to Jenny Meyer from Luganville on Santo on Wednesday just as the system began to hit the island's west.
