Former Bougainville militant leader seeks 'holistic development' for region

The former head of the Bougainville Revolutionary Army says mining will play a key role in the construction of a new nation.

A fortnight-long polling period is underway for the autonomous Papua New Guinea region's non-binding independence referendum.

A majority vote for independence is widely expected, but PNG's national parliament must ratify the result before it comes to effect.

However, this is not outwardly a concern to Sam Kauona, the former militant leader who is seeking to be the leader of Bougainville from next year.

He told Johnny Blades he's focussed on holistic development of his region.
