The Commandant of the US Coast Guard says he has made his first trip to the region as a sign of the greater commitment and "doubling down of resources" in the Pacific.
Admiral Karl Schultz has led the Coast Guard since June 2018 and oversees global operations for 41,000 active-duty, 6,200 reserve, and 8,500 civilian personnel.
He told Koro Vaka'uta why he was in New Zealand last week.
