Cyclone season could be quieter than normal

From , 5:02 am on 9 November 2020

The cyclone season is upon us. Officially it runs from the start of November to April.

RNZ Pacific's CYCLONE WATCH service for 2020 to 2021 is now in operation.

If Cyclone Alerts are issued for South Pacific countries, RNZ Pacific will broadcast hourly updates of these bulletins if necessary, and whenever the situation changes.

Our information comes from the Nadi Met Office in Fiji and from the New Zealand MetService.

In addition, we can access weather bulletins from the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Samoa and Tonga Meteorological Offices.

You can also follow us on @RNZPacific on Twitter or Facebook.

Meanwhile, this cyclone season could be quieter than the average season.

According to climate scientist James Renwick of Victoria University, that's because it's a La Nina phase and sea temperatures across a lot of the region are a bit below average themselves.
