Bougainville's quest for independence is the key factor for candidates lining up to win the regional seat in the Papua New Guinea parliament.
Bougainville is preparing to negotiate with the national parliament over the nature of the independence it will embrace, after last year's landslide support for such a move in a referendum.
Six candidates are to contest the regional seat made vacant when Joe Lera resigned to contest the Bougainville presidency.
It is one of four Bougainville seats in the PNG parliament.
