From , 6:02 am on 9 July 2021

New Caledonia has elected its first pro-independence Kanak president.

Louis Mapou was elected this morning in Noumea after months of negotiations between the two main pro-independent political groupings.

He heads the first pro-independence government to be elected in the French Territory since the Noumea accord of 1998.

Took help unpack this I am joined now by Nic Maclellan an expert on New Caledonian politics who writes about the territory for Islands Business.

Welcome Nic, how significant is this presidential election result?
