Siaosi Sovaleni has been announced the prime minister-elect in Tonga after securing 16 out of 26 votes in the Legislative Assembly.
His election represents a change of government for the kingdom as his only rival candidate 'Aisake Eke had the backing of the former prime minister Pohiva Tu'i'onetoa.
RNZ Pacific's correspondent in Tonga Kalafi Moala says Sovaleni's victory is being welcome by many people in the country who have been calling for change.
