How Tuvalu manages for water during drought

From , 6:00 am on 21 December 2021

Access to a safe and sustainable water supply is a critical issue in many parts of the Pacific, not least in the nine tiny atoll islands of Tuvalu, where drought is common.

While the past month has seen some rain in Tuvalu, earlier this year a significant drought was forecast.

The local Red Cross is well placed to help out because it is one of the  few organisations that has a presence on each of the inhabited islands.

Red Cross official, Eleala Avanitele says they have this year surveyed all the residents about their water use and strove to help them improve their water management.

This year's dry spell proved particularly onerous because the only desalination unit was out of action.

Ms Avanitele told Don Wiseman about how Tuvalu copes with its water issues.
