China strengthens Fiji ties, mothballs Pacific multi-lateral

From , 6:02 am on 31 May 2022

Security was tight in Suva today/Monday as China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his delegation met with the Fiji government and foreign ministers from the region.

Speaking after the meeting Bainimarama welcomed Beijing's renewed commitment to the region. China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi through a translator responded in kind welcoming the bilateral agreements signed between the two countries.

However China was not able to gain support from Forum leaders for its proposal for a new multilateral deal that includes free trade, humanitarian and covid-relief assistance, training for police, cybersecurity, marine mapping, and gaining greater access to natural resources.

RNZ Pacific's correspondent Lice Movono has been covering the meeting in Suva and spoke with me after the press conference.
