Harrowing stories are emerging from survivors of a devastating wildfire that destroyed the historic resort town of Lahaina on the island of Maui in Hawaii.
As of Friday, the death toll stands at 53 but it is most likely to change.
It started from vegetation in nearby highlands before moving rapidly towards the town, driven forth by strong winds generated by a Cyclone south of Hawaii.
Lahaina resident Leimoana Fa'alogo told RNZ Pacific the town was caught by surprise and that local firefighters were unable to contain the flames.
Finau Fonua has the story.
