Thousands of people near the site of a huge landslide in Papua New Guinea have been told to be ready for evacuation in case of further landslides.

The area is home to close to eight-thousand people, two-thousand of whom are thought to have been buried alive on Friday.

Enga provincial disaster committee Chair, Sandis Tsaka, has visited the site twice.

He told RNZ Pacific's Caleb Fotheringham the ground is unstable and extremely dangerous, and they have told people to be ready to evacuate.
