An internationally renowned Samoan artist has brought back her exhibition to Samoa for local audiences to better understand its third gender community.

Gaining rave reviews at the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022, 'Paradise Camp' by Yuki Kihara is centred around a suite of twelve photographs which recast and "upcycle" select paintings by French post-impressionist painter Paul Gauguin, who is believed to have been inspired by Samoa.

The photographs feature Fa'afafine and Fa'atama models - a third gender community unique to Samoan culture.

The launch of Paradise Camp coincided with Samoa's 62nd Independence Day and was attended by Samoa's deputy prime minister Tuala Tevaga Iosefo Ponifasio

Yuki Kihara spoke with Pacific Waves host Susana Suisuiki.
