Fifty-one percent of Pacific children in New Zealand have been found to fall into the category of obese or overweight.

In a just-published Medical Journal article, author Velia Man pulled together the evidence from international studies as well as local research.

Velia Man says that compared to non-Pacific children, the obesity rate is 2.6 times higher, which highlights a critical issue that can no longer be ignored.

She spoke with RNZ Pacific's Moera Tuilaepa-Taylor about some of the challenges Pacific families face.
