Kiribati is just a few weeks away from its national elections, while right at the moment the country is engrossed in its 35th independence holiday celebrations.

Kiribati has experienced a turbulent last four years with its government choosing to switch diplomatic allegiance to China over Taiwan, pulling out of and then returning to the Pacific Islands Forum, and starting a spat with the judiciary, which included removing all the expatriate judges working in the country.

There has not been a lot of clarity provided for these moves by the Kiribati government.
