Dr Antony Vavia is the first Pacific Islander to graduate with a PhD in Marine Biology from Auckland University of Technology.
Dr Vavia is also only the second Cook Islander ever to attain a doctorate in this field, with Dr Teina Rongo being the first.
He says being raised in the Cook Islands; he has a natural desire to take care of the ocean.
Dr Vavia spoke with RNZ Pacific reporter Grace Fiavaai about his research.
