Independent research commissioned by New Zealand police into bias has found being Māori, Pasifika, male or mentally ill puts people at higher risk of force being used.

The inquiry Understanding Police Delivery, which was commissioned in 2020, released its first seven reports looking at fairness and equity on Wednesday.

Dr Catherine Leonard, Managing Director of Ihi Research and Development, one of the appointed researchers says they found the group most likely to be tasered were Pasifika males.

She spoke to RNZ Reporter Ruth Hill who began by asking her to explain the reasons behind the finding.
