The government of France has released 130 million euros in additional aid for businesses and public services in New Caledonia.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Economy says the aid will make it possible to finance the operation of public services, like health and electricity in the French territory.

They say the payment will be conditional on the adoption of reforms to improve the current economic and social model.

New Caledonia journalist Coralie Cochin told RNZ Pacific's Caleb Fotheringham the money is just enough to keep the French territory afloat for a while but not enough to rebuild it following the violent riots in May.
