A Kanak independence advocate says the appointment of a right-wing Prime Minister in France could potentially fan violence in New Caledonia.
 
Pockets of the heavily militarised capital Noumea remain volatile and rifts continue between pro and anti independence groups in the territory.
 
Pro-independence alliance, FLNKS, member Jimmy Naouna, says the new Prime Minister, Michel Barnier, has previously sided with loyalists in the territory.
