Hīkoi Speaking Our Truth
Documentary | Out now
History, Society & Culture
Hīkoi Speaking Our Truth is a new documentary that seeks to understand the events on 18 October 2004 around the passing of the Foreshore and Seabed Act – a piece of legislation still causing shockwaves 20 years on. The Act effectively locked out any Māori claims to customary rights or title and vested ownership of the whole seabed and foreshore to the Crown, except that owned by private individuals. The documentary is told through the voice of Tāmati Rimene-Sproat as he explores the political and cultural environment of the day; uncovers the stories, memories and motivations of key players within the hīkoi, examining the fallout and repercussions of that Act.
Hīkoi Speaking Our Truth is out now on rnz.co.nz and the RNZ YouTube channel. Made with support from Te Māngai Pāho.
