Despite being beaten to the mark by Kiribati by fifteen minutes, Aotearoa was one of the first countries to see in the New Year. A hallmark of New Years Eve celebrations is the congregation of people ready to countdown to the stroke of midnight, by which fuses are ignited, and fireworks jump out into the air. But how did our major city centers fare in welcoming in 2025?

To help, we’ve enlisted our correspondents: Ellie Marsden in Auckland, Tyler Baikie in Wellington, Kate White in Christchurch, and RNZ Afternoon’s Jesse Mulligan in Dunedin. And found varying levels of success and tribulation.

List of Awards Handed out for 2024/25 Celebrations:

  • The Humble We Tried Award to Wellington
  • The Most Hated on Facebook Award to Auckland
  • Burning Man Award for Best Surprise Fireworks to Dunedin
