Campaigners trying to win a pardon for Boer War soldier Harry "Breaker" Morant are upset that British Secretary of Defence, Dr Liam Fox will not meet with them while he's in Australia this week. This is particularly hard to take today, which is Australia Day. The Breaker Morant story is legend in Australia, and was made popular here with a 1980 film starring Jack Thompson, Brian Brown and Edward Woodward. Lieutenants Morant and Peter Handcock were executed for the murder of 12 prisoners of war. They maintained they were simply following orders. Last year Fox declined a petition for a pardon. Nick Bleszynski is an author and one of the campaigners for the Morant pardon and says new evidence demands at least a new inquiry.
Vintage cars and clothing won't be the only draw card at this years Heritage Day celebrations on Waitangi day in Blenheim. All the food on the menu for the Marlborough Vintage Car Club event will be whipped up with recipes from a bygone era. The sultana cakes and other food from the 1940s and '50s will be right at home alongside the vintage cars and characters dressed up in period clothing.
